Dear Margaret,
I’m really sorry to hear about your school struggles. I didn't do too well in junior year either, and that's not great considering university and all. My senior year has been a little better than last so far, but that's because it's senior year, the year in which the main focus is what you'll be doing the next year.
Anyways, I'm sorry that you're under so much pressure to do well. I have faith that you can do whatever you set your mind to, whatever that may be. Your sister’s life shouldn’t have any effect on how you live yours, and if your parents hold you to her standard, remind them that you two are different people, with talents in different areas. Besides, I doubt if your sister could be such an interesting pen pal. Your letters are filled with intrigue and insight into your mind, and I enjoy hearing your thoughts on things.
Like the story about the soldiers. I’ve noticed a some disrespect towards soldiers in the months after the war. I’m glad that someone else sees it the way I do, that soldiers deserve fair treatment for protecting us.
And yes, your sister did contribute to the effort. But that doesn’t excuse being rude.
I don’t know. I think I’ll stop talking about this now.
Well, you asked a song that helps when you’re feeling confused. I suppose this isn’t terribly helpful, but the song “Straighten Up and Fly Right” is sort of a guide to get where you want to go. I guess it’s got a sort of straightforward message, but it means well. At least, I mean well. And Nat King Cole is a great singer, so it works.
Well, I think you understand what I meant. I’m sorry if it sounded rude- I know it isn’t easy to fulfill your dreams. I just meant to end your confusion and self-doubt, and the best way to do that is to shed the negativity and just keep on going. I just believe in you, is all.
Sincerely,
Lawrence
PS Next letter will be longer, I promise.
