And with the conclusion of last week's loss to Christian HS, the varsity season is over. Sage Creek's women put it all on the line in their final 4 games against Vista, El Camino, Escondido Academy, and Christian, but fell just a bit short. They lost 3 of their final 4 games, placing them with an ending league record of 1-9 and an overall record of 15-19. Although the team was not able to win CIF's which they impressively did last year to become the first team to earn Sage Creek a banner, they did achieve some fairly impressive statistics as a whole. The biggest win streak last year was 5 and this year it was 6. In addition to that, last year's longest losing streak was 7 and this year's was 6. Aside from the intense dedication and commitment to effort and the matches, Lizi Cudal, Corinna Bray, and Riley Gill had stand out seasons, as they all rose above the national rankings attack percentage, offensive kills, set points, and kills per set.
Sage Creek's varsity team has had a pretty effective turnaround since losing their last 3, by winning 2 of their last 5. They defeated Orange Glen 3-2 back on October 19th and won again 3-2 against El Camino a few days later on the 21st. Carlsbad, La Costa Canyon, and Rancho Buena Vista once again got the better of the lady bobcats by defeating them 3-0 in matches, and 9-0 collectively. Currently, they stand 14-16 in their overall record and 1-9 in league play. Their coach stated that, "The only way to get these girls better is to just keep practicing and working hard." Sounds like the correct intentions to have with just 4 games to go.
Through the past 2 weeks, our Varsity girls are 0-3 and currently have a 12-13 record. Despite their efforts, their front line has been out played as simple errors have damaged the scoreboard during the matches. Carlsbad, Vista, and La Costa Canyon got the better of the girls this time around for sure as the overall total in scores maxed out to a 9-1 loss in matches. With 5 games scheduled in the 2 weeks ahead, these girls need to get going if they want their 12-13 record to peak over .500.
After last edition of the SC Times, the Bobcat troop has faired 3-5 in their recent games, including tournament play. They currently have an overall record of 12-10 and a league record of 0-1. Coach Jessica LaScola has had her team working very hard in order to ensure a positive record for the second year of Varsity volleyball at Sage Creek High School. Despite a disappointing 0-4 turnout on the weekend of the 25th, Sage Creek still stands tall and is progressing with intense practices.
With the school year and season easing in, the women's JV and varsity tennis teams are beginning to enter the heart of their schedules. Thus far for head coach Jill Kenny, the JV team fairs at 0-2 overall and 0-1 in league play. Scored will be updated in a few days time, as scores have not officially been reported, but look back on the sage creek times for more updates. The JV team's next game is on Tuesday October 6th against Carlsbad High.
The varsity team is not playing to any higher standard than the JV squad, as they currently stand with an 0-4 overall record and 0-2 in league play. However, out of those games, only one of them was decided by more than 6 matches. Check back here on the Sage Creek Times for further updates, as scores for varsity have not been reported as well. "True Leadership". This expression goes many ways, however few that receive the honorable title actually stand up to par with it. Luckily for Sage Creek, the captains of the sports teams represent those words. Specifically, Julia Hayashi, one of the two captains of the varsity girl's volleyball team, the other being Dakota Marshall. In an interview with Julia on the topic of the 2015-2016 season, she credited her fellow captain with providing "guidance and support" on the topic of being the captain of the team. She also stated that being captain has made her "relationship with [her] coaches and teammates much stronger". Being captain also has earned her coach's faith in leading the team on the court. When asked what the best part of being the captain was she replied, " The best part of being captain is being the leader of the team, being able to support my teammates anyway I can and helping lead the way to being a winning team".
Last year Sage Creek's girls varsity volleyball brought back the school's first ever CIF banner, which was very historic considering it was only the school's second year and first varsity team. Doing that required a ton of motivation, something Julia also possesses. "To motivate my team I try to get them as excited as possible before games to keep them pumped, and when we're not playing well as a team, I try to keep everyone positive and united". Clearly this team is full of optimism and the explanations all point to the captains. She exclaimed that her goals for this season are, "to work on my skills, become a better overall player, and to be the best teammate and captain I can be!" In addition she and Dakota share the similar goal of obtaining another CIF banner to display in the gym as well as a winning season. The future is looking very bright for this talented team, as only the season will tell what they can accomplish. |
