On the second and third weekends in April one of the biggest and most notable music and arts festival known as Coachella occurs. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts festival is held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. in 1999, Paul Tollett founded the event that to this day holds multiple featured concerts ranging from indie, hip-hop, rock, as well as art exhibits. Due to the increasing popularity, in 2003 it was permitted for people to stay and camp on the grounds. This becoming one of the events' famous amenities along with many others adopted throughout the years.
On November 5, 1993, Paul Tollett and the Pearl Jam management were responsible for booking a venue in an attempt to boycott Ticketmaster along with the venues and auditoriums it controlled. In their search, they came across the Empire Polo Club where Pearl Jam performed for almost 25,000 fans . Although the plan was primarily for their despute with Ticketmaster, Tollett saw promise in the location and carried out his thoughts for a world wide festival known as Coachella. In Paul Tollett's explanation of Coachella, he had stated that,"Even before we looked at [Empire Polo Club], it hit us. We wanted it to be far. So you surrender. So you can't leave your house and see a couple bands and be back home that night. We want you to go out there, get tired, and curse the show by Sunday afternoon. That sunset, and that whole feeling of Coachella hits you".
Coachella has been known for its wide range of performances and bands, and has created quite a list throughout the years. Some of the past and present performers are; The Black Keys, Rage Against the Machine, Beck, Nine Inch Nails, The Strokes, The White Stripes, Jay-Z, Beastie Boys, Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, AC/DC, Snoop Dog, Madonna, ect...
