Based on: The DUFF by Kody Keplinger
Director: Ari Sandel
Rated: PG-13
Cast: Mae Whitman, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne
The DUFF is a new romantic comedy based on the novel by the same title. It came out in theatres in February.
The movie is the story of high-school senior named Bianca. She learns that her classmates think of her as the DUFF, the Designated Ugly Fat Friend. The duff is the friend that isn’t as pretty as the others and act as the approachable one for people who want to learn about their more popular friends. Bianca turns to a childhood friend for help, Wesley. He’s good-looking, athletic, and popular. He agrees to help reinvent Bianca and teach her to be cool if she helps him study for chemistry. Bianca tries desperately to make her last year in high school an exciting and memorable one, unlike her previous three years. But she eventually learns that she doesn’t have to change herself for anyone. Bianca must find the courage to stand up for herself against the popular but judgemental students as well as the entire school’s social order.
It’s a really hilarious and very cute representation of the high school social standards that’s eerily accurate at some points. Bianca sets a good example of self-confidence and making the most of the high school experience. This movie tried to send a message telling all teens, and supposedly anyone being shunned or criticized, to own themselves and flaunt it. Everyone has flaws and incapabilities. Bianca says, “Everyone is someone’s DUFF.” People should ignore the hate and accept their special and unique talents and interests.
This movie would be recommended to any and all teenagers. There’s certainly an abundance of LOL moments and the message is one to keep at heart: be yourself. Just remember that it’s rated PG-13 and there are many reasons for that. Enjoy!
