Cafe Bobcat is the opportunity for students to showcase their talents for performing in a fun environment. For the first Cafe Bobcat of this year, students were encouraged to dress up in Halloween costume, and the cafeteria was decorated in spooky decor. Among the wonderful performances was a rendition of Bo Burnham’s Left Brain, Right Brain by Mike Townzen and Nic Reynoso, a spectacular magic act by the Sage Creek Times’ own Sam Bodnar and Sean Cooke, a performance of the slam poem Punk Rock John from Jeremy Hargrove, and a gymnastic performance from Jennifer Baxter. The night was led by two delightful emcees, Natalie Goins and Elena Trask. There also was a costume contest which was won by an adorable Princess Jasmine. The night was great for the parents, students, and friends that attended, and hopefully this tradition can continue for years at Sage Creek.

At Triton day at UCSD, a speaker for prospective engineering students said, “Since you all know how to code...”. This phrase implies that kids should come out of high school with a thorough knowledge of coding. However, how can we expect this of our students if our schools are not offering any computer science courses? Sage Creek was founded as a STEM school. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. But in terms of technology, SCHS offers no courses. This is an issue that must be remedied. If Sage Creek is to be known as a STEM school, it must immediately begin cultivated its technology department, especially its computer science department. Computer jobs are on the rise. We live in an era of technology. Technology is all around us, in our homes, at work,in our cars and in our pockets. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a computer jobs rank among the highest for percent growth in number of workers. According to a Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce report, 51% of all STEM jobs by 2018 will be computer occupations. This shows how a comprehensive understanding of computer science is necessary for our current generation which will be entering the work force in a few years. Without a school class, where are students supposed to learn how to code? If schools are supposed to prepare students for the work field, and if Sage Creek is supposed to be STEM focused, why is it not then preparing us for the majority of STEM jobs in the future? At Carlsbad High School, there will be five computer science courses next year. Sage Creek will have none. And we don't plan to have any any time soon either. And according to the plan, we probably won't have any by the time our current 10th graders graduate. How can we consider ourselves a STEM school which provides a comprehensive and future aiding education when we don't prepare our students for the future job market? This year, we added, among other courses, Ceramics. Next year, we will add Dance and Digital Photography. There is nothing inherently wrong with these courses but they are all VAPA, or Visual and Performing Arts, courses. But we are not a VAPA school. According to the original school plan there were supposed to be no VAPA opportunities at all and all courses were supposed to be STEM related. But here we see that we are adding VAPA, not STEM courses. Granted we are adding some STEM courses but only those that are either continuations of courses that we already offer or the next course course to be taken as students progress from grade to grade. School representatives like to boast about our STEM program but at our school STEM has become SEM. We have no strictly technology courses. This is why we need to add computer science courses. And this needs to happen soon. It is becoming more apparent that if we do not act now, technology courses will never be the school's priority. Sure, adding new courses costs money. That money right now is going to VAPA programs at a STEM school—our school. Why are we letting this happen? Do we want Sage Creek to become a VAPA school with no educational backbone? We need to act now and find a way to add technology courses or we will always regret the consequences. Please post your comments below. Let us know what your opinion on this matter is! Tens of students are rejoicing in their new found freedom now that the AP European History test is over. The test occurred on Friday, May 8th but that is all in the past. The future holds a bright new hope.
History students made history as they were the first class to take an AP test. Tensions have subsided and cramming sessions have ended. Students may now actually be able to get some sleep and stop waking up to the thought of random facts about pope Julius II and Nietzsche. Peace has come at last after a long and hard fought battle with a textbook about wars, generals, revolutions, and many more such events. Finals Week is over and now S.C.H.S. is turning to the final trimester!
- sophomores will be taking the California HS exit exam in a week or so, so freshman get to arrive at school late for the 2 days of the test. - course selections for the upcoming year are approaching - the Bobcat club carnival is coming next month for clubs to advertise what they are all about - check the sports schedule page for the upcoming games of our new spring season!
Sage Creek High School has just completed their second annual hoopcoming festivities, which were quite a display of creativity and excitement. For the majority, all of the athletic teams persevered in their games while fans cheered them on. Sage Creek Boys JV basketball won against LCC with a 61-51 victory. The half time shows were phenomenal as Sage Creek's first musical production, Grease, performed "Summer Nights" at halftime. The production is taking place the last 3 days of February (February 26-28) at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center at 7pm. Tickets are available at sagecreekdrama.com. In addition to that, finals are approaching in 3 weeks, so students are hitting the books and studying in preparation for decent grades.
