Cast: Lily James, Eloise Webb, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden
Cinderella is a revisited version of the 1950 animated film by Disney. The movie follows the general storyline from the original movie.
This film begins during Ella’s childhood. She is living happily with her parents when her mother suddenly takes ill. This results in her death, which devastates the family. Her father decides to remarry, and this is when Ella’s happiness is taken away. Her new stepmother moves in with her two horrible daughters, and they treat Ella with utter hatred behind her father’s back. One day, while Ella’s father is on a business trip, she receives word that her father has become sick and died. While Ella grieves, her stepmother and stepsisters take advantage of her father’s absence. They make Ella her servant, and Ella is much too kind to defend herself. To her, all hope seems lost until one day, while riding in the woods, she meets the prince. From here on out, Ella tries to see the prince again, only to be stopped by her dreadful family. The story then follows Ella’s struggle to include kindness and courage into her life.
I would rate this film two and a half stars out of five. While the realistic effects were amazing, there were many aspects of the story that didn’t follow the original fairytale. I also found that the majority of the dialogue was cheesy and the actress overplayed her part. I think that this movie is much more suited to a younger audience.
