Mrs. Kuehl is a new English teacher at Sage Creek. Her past teaching job was at La Jolla High School where she taught English 1-2, Honors, a Writer's Workshop and was the Track and Field Distance Coach and Assistant Cross Country Coach. But now is a new addition to the teaching and coaching staff, as she is the new Assistant Cross Country Coach.
1) Made you want to become a teacher at Sage Creek?
When, I first read the job posting that there was an English opening here, of course, I looked into what the school is all about. The philosophy and vision of Sage Creek was so appealing to me from the second that I read, what the school is all about that it immediately flew to the top of my list of places that I wanted to teach.
2) What makes you a unique teacher?
I like to use music to give directions in class rather than giving directions with my voice. For example, everyday when there is one minute left in class, I have the Mission Impossible theme song play and that means that the kids are allowed to pack up.
3) What made you want to become a teacher, especially after majoring in Journalism?
When I was in college I started working with some high school girls, such as mentoring. I became obsessed with being around that age group, because I felt really fulfilled, but my passion in life is reading and writing. So I thought to myself, what could be the best career to infuse the two passions? The obvious answer was to become a teacher.
4) Do you have a specific book that has impacted your life?
I feel as though I have had so many books that have impacted me but probably The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by JRR Tolkien. That book I have referenced so many times in my life, so I feel as though it has guiding themes to how I see people and challenges. When I meet someone I try and think about what person they would be in the Fellowship.
5) What’s your favorite part about being a teacher?
Is being able to make something that seems really difficult, and being the bridge between them being intimidated and mastering it. Whatever it may be, whether it be reading difficult text or whether it’s writing.
