According to NBC, 27,000 migrants have entered Croatia during a surge that began a few days ago. According to the Croatian police, they are still expected many more Serbian migrants to arrive in the coming days, and that authorities are setting up tents for migrants as shelter from rain and cold.
The surge through Croatia began last Wednesday once Hungary pushed the migrants away from its border with Serbia. On Sunday in the Croatian town of Tovarnik, hundreds of migrants surged toward a train that they believed would take them to Austria. According to The Associated Press, the police were simply overwhelmed as the migrants tried to "climb through the windows of the already packed carriages."
As a result of Hungary closing its borders to people fleeing violence in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, these people have simply rushed from border to border in an attempt to make their way north. Others attempt to traverse the Mediterranean to reach countries such as Germany and Sweden, but this method poses its own risks as well; two migrant vessels sank on Sunday, and thirteen were killed. According to The Associated Press, "Authorities from Greece to Austria are struggling to respond."
